Indications 

  • Depressive illness
  • Generalized anxiety disorder
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Panic disorder
  • Social anxiety disorder

 

How to use :

The dose of this medicine will be different for different patients, and the doctor must always tell you how to use the medicine, but the usual dose is:
Depressive illness/ Generalized anxiety disorder/ Obsessive-compulsive disorder:

Adult: 10 mg once daily; increased if necessary up to 20 mg daily.
Elderly: Initially 5 mg once daily; maximum 10 mg per day.
 

Panic disorder:
Adult: Initially 5 mg once daily for 7 days, then increased to 10 mg daily; maximum 20 mg per day.
Elderly: Initially 2.5 mg once daily; maximum 10 mg per day.
 

Social anxiety disorder:
Adult: Initially 10 mg once daily for 2–4 weeks, dose to be adjusted after 2–4 weeks of treatment; usual dose 5–20 mg daily.
Escitalopram should normally not be used for children and adolescents under 18 years unless ordered by a doctor.

 

Missed dose:
Call your doctor or pharmacist for instructions.

 

Side effects:
Every medicine by the side of therapeutic effects may cause some adverse effects, although not everybody gets them. If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. This includes any possible side effect not listed in this leaflet:
Headache, insomnia, drowsiness, nausea, diarrhea, ejaculatory disorder, fatigue, dizziness, anorgasmia, abnormal dreams,
paresthesia, yawning, diaphoresis, decreased libido, menstrual disease, xerostomia, constipation, dyspepsia, decreased appetite, vomiting, abdominal pain, flatulence, toothache, impotence, urinary tract infection, neck pain, shoulder pain, back pain, flu-like symptoms, rhinitis, sinusitis, nasal congestion.

Note:

  • This medicine has been prescribed for your present disease. Do not pass it on to others with same symptoms.
  • Tell your doctor before taking this medicine if you are taking any other prescription or non-prescription (over-the-counter)
  • medicine or if you have had any unusual or allergic reaction to this medicine or any other medicines, foods, dyes,
  • preservatives.
  • This medicine is available only with your doctor's prescription.
  •  Take this medicine at the same time each day and only as directed by your doctor. Do not take more of it, do not take it
  • more often, and do not take it for a longer time than your doctor ordered.
  • The progress of treatment should be checked at regular visits by your doctor.
  • You may have to take escitalopram for 1 to 4 weeks before you begin to feel better.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine without first checking with your doctor. The dose should preferably be reduced gradually over about 4 weeks, or longer.
  • Escitalopram may be taken with or without food on a full or empty stomach. If your doctor tells you to take it in a certain way, follow your doctor’s instructions
  • Contact your doctor right away if you are unusually agitated, irritable, or have thoughts about hurting or killing yourself.
  • This medicine may cause drowsiness and dizziness. Be careful while driving or operating machinery.
  • Do not take Escitalopram with or within 14 days of taking a drug with Monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor activity
  • (Isocarboxazid, Furazolidone, phenelzine, procarbazine, selegiline, tranylcypromine), If you do, you may develop extremely high blood pressure or convulsions (seizures).
  • Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages while you are taking Escitalopram.
